Joyground

A family space combining children's play areas, workshops, a coffee corner and spaces for parents within approximately 110 m².

Iași, Romania

A place for play, and for staying.

A family venue has to work at more than one scale. Children need places to play and explore; parents need somewhere to sit, talk and remain connected to what is happening around them. Joyground places these uses within a shared interior.

Several activities, one place

The programme combines play areas, workshops, a coffee corner and places for parents. Within approximately 110 square metres, the arrangement of these activities becomes the main design question. Their relationship must support both movement and the quieter moments of a visit.

The workshop area introduces another rhythm alongside free play. Together, these uses broaden the brief from a playroom into a place where families can spend time.

Designing at two scales

Visibility and circulation are central considerations in the study. The perspective of a seated parent differs from that of a child moving through the space. Considering both brings attention to the relationship between activity areas and the places around them.

The coffee corner gives the adults' experience a place in the programme. It supports the intention behind Joyground: a shared visit in which play, conversation and everyday hospitality can sit comfortably together.
