Stegaru House

On a site descending towards the valley, the house’s position on the slope and the coordination of its structure become the starting points for the design.

Planning documentation / 2025

Finding a place on the slope.

Land falling towards a valley changes where a house design begins. At Stegaru House, the study of the ground-floor datum becomes a decision about the whole scheme. The house is raised relative to the natural terrain, with fill considered on the valley side in relation to the foundation design.

The datum as a design decision

The approach seeks to optimise the foundations and the relationship between building and land. It concerns the positioning of the whole house, with consequences for the finished ground and the way the construction meets its site. Here, the section matters as much as the plan.

The level study is accompanied by an assessment of material quantities. Proposed geometry and its construction implications are considered together, allowing the siting decision to be followed through towards execution.

Structure and space, developed together

Coordination with the structural design brings adjustments to wall thicknesses and column positions. The aim is to retain clear sightlines and integrate structural elements within the rooms. A small shift in plan can change the reading of a corner or the opening of a view from inside.

In some corners, differences between column dimensions and wall thickness call for additional finish build-ups. Such adjustments reveal a quiet part of the design process: apparently simple interior lines depend on the coordination of systems with different dimensions and requirements.

Before the finished image

The work moves between two scales: the terrain, which establishes the level and siting of the building, and the room, where its structure must find a place. The character of the study emerges through these successive adjustments, from the meeting with the valley to the detail of a wall.
